History of the laboratory

Research on dynamic geopositioning systems and solutions started at the end of the 80’s with a focus on robotics. At that time, the first high-precision GPS systems had just been introduced on the market and the team played a key role in evaluating the later for on site construction and mapping. The original testing facility SESSYL was essential for conducting these activities between 1995 and 2005.

In 2005, the research evolved to the road transport systems concentrating on the GNSS technologies that were relevant to support and follow novel transportation system. Among the systems of interest are differential GNSS and GNSS hybridized with proprioceptive sensors and digital maps.

Past French research projects (ARCOS, ANR-CityVIP…) and international research projects (GIROADS, CVIS, SAFESPOT…) but also ongoing project have largely contributed to the well-established reputationof GEOLOC team on dynamic geopositioning methods and systems. GEOLOC activities contriibute to the communities of transport, mobile robotics and GNSS. They are transdisciplinary by nature and benefit from all research from IFSTTAR laboratories.

Two Research Themes plus Expertise/Standardization

The research in GEOLOC laboratory is structured around two pillars, addressing the challenges of vehicles and pedestrians geolocalization respectively.
